Taking party by surprise, Chhakka Bahadur wins in Humla
Kathmandu, Dec 8 (RSS): The independent candidate Chhaka Bahadur Lama won a parliamentary seat from Humla, the one constituency district. Lama ran independently after the CPN (Maoist Centre) to which he was associated refused to give him a ticket.
Lama got 8,491 votes against 8,444 votes secured by his closet candidate of Nepali Congress’ Mangal Bahadur Shahi. Lama is a politburo member of the Maoist Centre.
The left alliance candidate Chhimi Dorje Lama garnered only 2,700.
Humla is the district which has witnessed election victory alternatively between the NC, CPN-UML and the Maoist Center since 2051BS.
The NC’s Chakra Bahadur Shahi was elected in 2051BS from Humla, while CPN-UML’s Gorakh Bahadur Bogati in 2056BS, the Maoist Centre in the 2064 BS first Constituent Assembly polls, and NC’s Jiban Bahadur Shahi in the 2070 BS second CA elections.
Political experts blame the alternate poll results for the compulsion of the locals to switch between different political parties in each election for a range of development activities.
The district is yet to be connected to road network, while the locals often cry for food grains as the produce cannot sustain them throughout the year. They have to walk hours or a day to reach a health facility.
“The locals approved my agenda to link the district with roads, upgrade Simikot airport, and develop the Nepal-Hilsa transit point as of international standard, and made me victorious,” said the elated Lama while talking to National News Agency (RSS).
He also has plans to carry out development activities in livestock, horticulture, medicinal herb farming, and trade in the district.
Lama has earned Bachelors’ Degree in law. He also served as an Assistant Minister in the direct rule of former King Gyanendra Shah before joining the Maoist Centre after joining the mainstream politics.
